Picking out paint colors for your home. Hint; use color to create an environment appropriate for the use of the space. Always pick a paint color based on how you want the room to feel. Consider the mood you’re trying to create, and consider how much natural light there is. Remember colors vary from room to room and the amount of light, so always test a sample of the paint color on the wall, don’t just go by the color paper swatch you see at the store. Paint colors read differently in each home. It also helps when picking a paint color to think about what else is going into that room. Fabrics and materials need to be selected at the same time as the color palette, as part of the design plan. The types of materials and fabrics and the color scheme must go hand in hand with the mood you are trying to achieve. Even if implemented in phases, it is essential that all decisions be part of a coherent whole. For example, if you are thinking about a dining room color. What color is your dining room furniture? Do you have items you intend to use, artwork, and window treatments? What are the tones of these items? Be careful that you don’t try to incorporate too many colors or tones in one room. I would suggest that three colors in one room are adequate. So in a dining room with espresso color furniture, I would go for color that is a warm paint color that also gives a contrast. Even in a neutral color scheme, punches of color are necessary to add strength to the look. All the colors should relate to one another. I find it rare to have carte blanche in choosing color scheme. There is always an imposed starting point, whether it be an existing floor finish, the color / tone of the furniture your already own, or the view from the outside. Draw color inspiration from what you intend to use. Remember, great design is always in the details.
